geo-technology

February 28, 2011 under Technology

I do love technology and it seems that geo related technology is still not quiet big new yet.

I know for a fact that most people who I mix with are on foursquare and like to discuss how geo-data could be used. In Leeds in particular, there seems to be a trend for tech-heads to use this kind of technology. One step further and we could join the new geo-game cloud where people race each other to get to specific targets using the GPS technology to its fullest.

Like most, in fact all other bits of technology, this one has stemmed from the military. Computers and then the internet were utilised to share information and keep reports in the military. It seems that the public interest exists and the demand creeps up on us eventually. Marking GPS into a mobile phone is something quiet unique that could hold just as many uses as the internet. We just need to wait for the one product like facebook to explode and make this new GPS technology a big thing. Oh wait, it already exits doesn’t it.

Well, if foursquare is already here, what’s the issue. It quiet easy actually. The simplest answer is that people are still private and don’t have the personal need to use every part of the smart phone. It seems the public actually enjoys the technology enough to just use it and not really use the full potential. After a conversation with some other people, I then found out that Its also another networking club. Children and grand parents are also pushed out of this technology as their purpose it to escape the radar. Teens hate their parents knowing where they are and old people don’t want people to know in case they are not at home and they could get burgled.

As negative as I may sound at times about this, its clear that people who love social media have taken to how tweets can have a GPS location.  Most people outside this world probably don’t realise that the sat nav in their car is just the same technology. If tweets and apple pics and even satellite navigation can find its way into people everyday life then it seems that this technology may be in a slow period. At the same time it is probably the main new development that will change the way we meet people and travel in the real world.
